We review and rate dozens of USB drives - ranging from large capcity Hard disk based storage to Flash based USB drives which fit on your keychains, on this site.
Types of USB Drives:
- USB Hard Drives: These are simple powered cases, usually available for less than US$ 20-25 which can hold a standard PATA or SATA drive. An external power supply powers the drive, which connects to your desktop using a USB 2.0 key. These drives are not suited for prolonged use, as the cases rarely ever have sufficient airflow, cooling or power management to keep the hard drive safe for 24/7 operation.
- USB Storage Appliances: These are one level up from the simple hard drive cases. These appliances can hold multiple drives and sometimes offer RAID and sophisticated power management and backup operations which are driven by software installed on the computer. These drives are suitable if you only need to access the drive from one computer (connected via USB). If you need something more sophisticated, consider upgrading to a Network Drives (network attached drives).
-
- Flash / KeyChain USB Drives: These drives are the fastest growing segement of the USB Drive market, as the devices have become larger (16GB+) and more reliable over the year. Great for taking carrying your frequently accessed data and applications around. Many have enhanced security, including Encryption and Fingerprint based access control.
